Celebrating 30 Years of Impact
Our History
Thirty years ago, five young professionals — Jim Massie, Greg Means, Rich White, Sam White, and Rhod Shaw — believed Washington could work differently.
At a time when lobbying firms were built around silos and individual rainmakers, they imagined something collaborative: a firm where shared strategy mattered more than personal credit, and where success belonged to the team.
But the vision did not begin on K Street.

To think clearly and speak candidly, they would cross the river into Arlington, Virginia. Away from the noise and political theater, they met at a quiet restaurant called The Alpine. There, through deliberate conversations and bold thinking, they sketched the blueprint for a new kind of firm.
The restaurant’s name would later become the firm’s namesake and serve as a reminder that the strongest strategies are often shaped outside the spotlight.
From the beginning, The Alpine Group charted its own course:
- Colleagues would collaborate, not compete.
- Clients would benefit from the collective strength of the firm.
- We would operate in all corners of Washington, so we would never have to sweat elections.
- Results would matter more than ego.
As the firm grew, adding headcount, expanding expertise, and welcoming new voices, the founders often compared the process to building a tree fort.
Each new Alpiner brought something unique. A skill. A perspective. A relationship. With every addition, the structure became stronger, more dynamic, more distinctly its own. It was not designed by a single architect. It was improved by a contribution. Over time, the firm became not just something the founders built, but something everyone helped shape.
What began as a small idea among a handful of 20-something upstarts has become a nationally respected bipartisan powerhouse generating more than $20 million in annual revenue.
Today, The Alpine Group:
- Serves as the U.S. flagship within a global public affairs network spanning more than 50 countries
- Is consistently recognized as a Top Lobbying Firm
- Operates as part of a strategic platform publicly traded on the Nasdaq
- Maintains a growing footprint in Dallas–Fort Worth, extending Alpine’s model beyond Washington

From discreet conversations at a neighborhood restaurant to a firm with national scale and global reach, the founding spirit remains intact.
And yet, the story is still being written.
Alpine continues to evolve, strengthening its bipartisan leadership, expanding its geographic reach, and deepening its strategic ambition while preserving the collaborative culture that defined its earliest days.
The tree fort is no longer small.
It is national.
It is global.
It is built to last.
And we are still adding to it.
ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE YEARS
Born from simple friendship, Alpine Group ditched the old corporate playbook to build a team that’s much more than the sum of its parts. Our team has been consistently recognized as “top lobbyists” over the years by a variety of organizations.
